I'm a great believer in helping those in need and I live my life that way. It embodies the spirit of much of what Keller Williams does in it's KW Cares. As the Past President of the Chamber of Commerce and Executive of the Board of Directors I'm involved with driving more commerce to our area.

As the President of the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach we serve the children in need: Provide food, clothing and entertainment for children from homeless shelters, provide dictionaries to the elementary school, donate gift cards for the needy at the annual Holiday party and bring food weekly to the Hallandale Food Pantry to help feed 200-300 people in need.

As a Police Athletic League (PAL) Board Member I help raise funds to keep 1,300 children on ball fields and out of prisions and well as serve to give to those in need. Once such annual event is the Holiday Shop with a Cop where we each of us help a number of needy children spend $100 of donated money for things of their dreams (Bikes, electronics, toys, gifts for their mother, etc.).

As a Recruitment Chair for the American Cancer Relay for Life I build teams to raise money for cancer research. There are other examples of giving back, but I think one sees what I do while I help clients buy the home of their dreams or relocate to a more suitable home.

Helping the Food Pantry

Paul Snow’s dedication puts meals on the table for thousands

(Except of article by Steve Cummings, Sun-Times)

……..   The Food Bank is open from 8 a.m. to 12 noon every Thursday. But the preparation and work begins during the week. Paul Snow the director, for the past 19 years has given his heart, soul and money to help feed thousands who have come to its doors, at the Haitian Methodist Church, located on the corner of S.W. 3rd. St. and 6th Ave.
"I cannot say enough about Paul Snow," said Vice Mayor Julian. "He is someone who has always given from the heart. He knows exactly what everyone is going through and wants to make sure they have food in their mouths every day."

It's time and the door is opened, a volunteer checks the identification card and uses a punch to mark the date to avoid someone coming through the line twice. It needs to be done this way to make sure that the entire process runs smoothly and without any negatives in what is such a positive endeavor.
As the line enters they are given the large bag, and are presented the cold produce bag as they leave.

"Without Paul, there is no food for these people to have," said Julian. "I feel it's important for them to know that."

"This is a story that needed to be told," said Joe Kessel, President of the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach. "The average resident of this community has no idea that this goes on each week. I felt that it was time they knew everything that went into feeding people and making a difference."
In addition, Kessel wanted to thank area businesses such as Panera Bread Company, C&C Shipping, Starbucks and Paris Cafe.
All five schools in Hallandale Beach contributed to the annual food drive. Vice Mayor Julian, Kessel and Snow thank Hallandale High, Gulfstream Middle School, Hallandale Elementary School, Hallandale Adult Community Center and Lanier/James School for their efforts.

SHOP with a COP

Area businesses step up for ‘Shop With A Cop’
(Excerpt of article by Steve Cummings – Sun Times)

……….. If you were shopping at Wal-Mart in Hallandale Beach this past Saturday, December 19th between 10 A.M. and noon, you may have sensed that trouble was brewing with the sight of forty uniform police officers assembled. Nothing could have been further from the truth as 123 deserving children from the community were treated to a $100 shopping spree courtesy of the hard work of Sgt. Paul Robert (recently promoted to the rank of Captain as of mid January) and the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League.

After the children dined at Hometown Buffet for breakfast, they were shuttled to Wal-Mart where Sgt. Robert and Officer Chris Taylor carefully organized the anxious children and paired them with awaiting Hallandale Beach Police officers who escorted them throughout the store choosing video games and bicycles while some used their funds to purchase clothes for their mother.

It was Police Major Ken Cowley who runs the Community Partnership division who approached grants coordinator at Wal-Mart Herm White four years ago about organizing Shop With A Cop.

Kiwanis Club President, Hallandale Beach Chamber President and PAL Board member Joe Kessel was seen serving breakfast along with his wife Suzy at Hometown Buffet before Joe helped several kids find their favorite holiday gifts navigating through the bustling aisles. “There is nothing more gratifying that helping children who are economically challenged at Christmas. Their warm glowing smiles makes me forget any personal issues that I may be experiencing.”

The country has been rocked by a tumultuous economy, but it is uplifting witnessing the unity between our police department and the local merchants enabling this selfless tradition of giving and sharing to continue.
